Red Fox Fur Alaskan Trapper Hat

These hats are essentially the Free Trapper with matching ear flaps. It’s unfortunate these hats are being phased out because they’re quite practical for the niche they occupy which is extreme cold weather protection. The ordinary Free Trapper could be worn oversized to cover the ears, but this variation adds protection for most of the face. I bought the last coyote one and I remember a third variety at some point but that’s gone now too. This hat isn’t terribly comfortable to wear indoors and so isn’t as flexible temperature wise as an equivalent size mouton or sheepskin. The Coyote is also tremendously poofy, even more than a fox would be. It’s a bit too attention-getting for my usual preference, but in 0 F/-18C I’ve not got a lot of options in my collection. The visor is also top notch and can be worn as they taught in the military 2 fingers above the bridge of the nose, providing great direct sunlight protection though in a daylight snow environment, glare will still be an issue. The back of the fur in the down position adequately covers the neck from sun & wind even without your hood up, though when it’s that cold, my hood’s staying on, thank you very much. The hat doesn’t easily convert to the down position on-the-fly, just FYI. Some of the guard hairs of my Coyote are sticking up like a cowlick but I think my local furrier will take care of that no problem. From what I can see of the pics, the fox version seems very similar.. Like most thick fur hats, the practical use of the hat is definitely niche, but in that niche it’s hard to beat!
